Round One : HTC One M9 Vs Samsung Galaxy S6 Brothers

This year the Mobile World Congress was dominated by two major camps : HTC and Samsung. While each camp had their own unique traits to offer, it goes without saying how the two camps are arch rivals. So in this year’s Ultimate Smartphone Battle we have the HTC One M9 on one side and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Brothers on the other side. Would the M9 be able to take on the challenge posed by the S6 brothers ? Would the S6 brothers crush the M9 ? Let get started !

One the left side, with a premium aluminium unibody design inspired by the previous generation we have the HTC One M9 ! On the right side, with a completely redesigned glass – metal chassis and an edge we have the Samsung Galaxy S6 brothers !

M9 Vs S6.001

Comparing the specifications of the two sides, it seems both of them go neck to neck. While the M9 is powered by an Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, the S6 is powered by its in-house Exynos 7420 processor. Although we still haven’t seen the performance of these processors in day-to-day use, initial benchmark results suggest that the Exynos 7420 processor in the S6 blows the Snapdragon 810 out of the water. The Snapdragon 810 is built on a 20nm scale whereas the Exynos 7420 processor is built on a 14nm scale. The smaller dimension results in lower power consumption and heat loss which improves the over all efficiency. So we believe this round should be given to the S6 brothers.

On the display front, we have a 1080P Super LCD 3 display on the M9 while the S6 features as 1440P (2K AKA QHD) Super AMOLED display. While the LCD Vs AMOLED war will always continue, the sheer amount of additional pixels on the S6 in such a small display surely makes it the winner of this round.

Next up is the camera. HTC this time has decided to follow the trend and go with a 20MP rear camera with an F2.2 lens. On the contrary, Samsung continues to use the same 16MP sensor used in the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 with a super fast F1.9 lens. So you might ask, what do these numbers convert to ? While the M9 can capture higher resolution images, the S6 can capture more bokehlicious images ! In the front camera department, HTC used some clever tactics and bought back the UltraPixel camera (4MP with F2.0 lens) which means better low light selfies. For Samsung its a 5MP front facing camera with F1.9 lens which means more bokeh. Since we do not have final sample images from each of the camera, we will call this round a tie.

Well, what’s the use of a smartphone if there is now power to run it ! The M9 has a larger 2840 mAh battery where as Samsung has gone the other way round and introduced a smaller 2550 mAh battery. Even though both of these phones support Quick Charge 2.0 the inclusion of wireless charging would have given the S6 and edge but since it has a smaller battery and a Quad HD display to power, this round goes to the HTV One M9.

Till now, the S6 brothers are leading the match 2 – 1 against the M9, will the M9 be able to make a comeback in the final round ? In the final round we have nifty little features which could be a do or die factor for some of us. While the M9 has support for expandable storage and completely new theming engine, the S6 has a fingerprint sensor for added security along with Samsung Pay. In this round, I will give an edge to the M9 since it has IPX3 water resistance which provides atlas some resistance to an accidental splash of water.

That definitely was a fierce fight, and to see it end in a draw was not some thing even we wished to see. Maybe when we get our hands on the review units, we would be able to have an even more in depth analysis which might help us find a winner. What do you think, are you going for the HTC One M9 or are you going for the Samsung Galaxy S6 brothers ? If you choose the S6, will you go for the Edge ? Do let us know your decision in the poll below and if even you are confused like us then comment below and we might find an answer together.
